BOOK PAINTINGS

With technology, a new way of life has emerged at an astonishing speed. While many remarkable improvements are taking place, I feel we are plowing full speed ahead without considering what is at risk of being lost. I use books to symbolize the change occurring in the world today.
To many people, books are sacred and evoke a warm, nostalgic feeling. They are a reminder of times past. The devoted and contemplative act of reading is losing its meaning in today's fast paced world, along with other human endeavors that require thought and care. Are we evolved enough to handle our own creations?
In most cases the books' titles provide inspiration-they are a path to comment on many social issues. The most challenging and rewarding part of the process is creating imagery that transforms the title into a new meaning- other than the one intended by the book’s author. A bit of levity engages the viewer and, hopefully, renders a serious message easier to consider. Vintage books are used because their linen covers mimic fine canvas and provide an ideal surface for paint. Creating art with repurposed materials attempts to realize the untapped potential in the world and offers up the idea of looking at things in a different way.

Studying printmaking gave me a foundation in drawing and a willingness to experiment with new methods, techniques and materials. My professional experience doing murals, decorative and faux finishes allowed me to work on various surfaces in large and small scale. I have painted on cement walls, cinderblock, velvet, metal, glass, Venetian plaster and wood. To me, almost anything can be a canvas. I have long had the idea of using my car as a surface for a painting but haven’t worked up the courage yet to do so.
Whatever surface or style, the underlying foundation of my work is a way for me to observe and react to the world at large. Each surface provides a stimulating challenge in conquering a new ‘terrain’ and renders a unique quality. I continually search for new surfaces and plan to revisit those pictured here.
